thePsychology.ai vs AATBS: An Honest Comparison

If you're reading this, you're probably choosing between AATBS and something else for your EPPP prep. AATBS is the name most people hear firstfrom a supervisor, a program director, or a classmate who passed three years ago. It's the safe pick.

I built thePsychology.ai, so I have an obvious bias. I'll be upfront about that. But I'll also be upfront about where AATBS genuinely does well. You deserve a real comparison, not a sales pitch.

Pricing

Total cost (3 months)$60$999 – $1,649
Total cost (6 months)$120$999 – $1,649

AATBS is a one-time purchase, which some people prefer because it feels "done." But if you're a postdoc making $45K with student loans, $1,649 is a lot to drop before you even know if the materials work for you.

We charge $20/month after a free week. If you pass in two months (which three of our users have), your total cost is $40.

Where AATBS Does Well

Brand recognition and track record. AATBS has been around since 1976. Thousands of psychologists have passed using their materials. There's comfort in that. Your supervisor probably used them. That social proof matters.

Large question bank. 3,000+ practice questions. If you want sheer volume, AATBS delivers.

Structured study plans. You get a clear schedule: read these chapters, do these quizzes, move on. If you want someone to tell you exactly what to do each day, AATBS provides that structure.

Where AATBS Falls Short

The materials are notoriously dry. This is the most consistent complaint across Reddit, psychology forums, and word of mouth. Multiple users describe the study guides as dense, textbook-style content that's painful to get through. When studying feels like a chore, you study less.

Static study plans. Your plan doesn't adapt. If you're already strong in Ethics but weak in Biological Bases, AATBS doesn't adjust. You study everything at the same pace.

Definition-heavy questions. Many AATBS practice questions test whether you can recall a definition. The real EPPP is application-basedyou need to apply concepts to clinical scenarios. Practicing definitions builds false confidence.

Dated platform. The interface works, but it hasn't kept up with modern learning tools. When you're spending 200+ hours on a platform, UX matters more than people think.

Where thePsychology.ai Is Different

AI-adaptive practice. Our questions adapt to your performance. The system identifies weak domains and generates targeted practice, not a fixed sequence.

Application-based questions. Our questions mirror the real EPPP: clinical scenarios, applied reasoning, the kind of thinking the actual exam tests. Not definitions.

Audio lessons. 80+ lessons with audio and text. Study on your commute, between sessions, wherever. AATBS is reading-only.

Built-in anxiety management. Our Recover feature provides evidence-based mental resets. EPPP anxiety is real, and no other prep program addresses it.

Case vignettes. Branching clinical scenarios that test your reasoning across domains. AATBS doesn't offer this.

Where We Fall Short

We're newer. AATBS has 50 years of history. We launched recently. If you want the proven, established choice, that's AATBS.

Smaller question bank. We don't have 3,000+ questions. Our bank is smaller but focused on quality and exam-realism over volume.

No printed materials. If you prefer physical books and paper study guides, AATBS sells those. We're fully digital.

Who Should Choose What

Choose AATBS if:

  • You prefer a one-time purchase and don't mind the price
  • You want physical study guides
  • Brand recognition and a long track record are important to you
  • You learn well from reading dense text

  • You want to try before committing ($0 for 7 days)
  • You learn better through practice testing than reading
  • You want questions that match how the real EPPP actually tests

  • You want adaptive study that targets your weak areas

Both programs have helped people pass. The right choice depends on how you learn and what you can afford. If you're unsure, try thePsychology.ai free for 7 daysno credit card required. You'll know pretty quickly whether it clicks.
